The LEED platinum certified home Jamie Logan created with partner Sherry Wiggins was conceived as model for the integration of elegant contemporary design with leading edge green technology. Energy saving features of the 2400 square foot home include a geothermal heat system, a ground source heat pump, R-13 windows, super insulated walls and ceilings and a powerful 10 KW of photovoltaics on the roof that meters far more electricity back to the grid than it draws.

Located in an established neighborhood, the Logan Wiggins House stands in the same small footprint as the 1950 structure it replaced. Two crab apple trees shade the front of the house and in the backyard a Norway maple dictated the placement of the patio. The master bedroom was built on piers so as to not disturb the roots of the stately oak that provides both shade and privacy for its residents.

Clad with recycled brick and salvaged beetle-kill pine wood siding, the one story structure boasts an unobtrusive but decidedly modern street face. In response to Wiggins’s request to live in a “box of light,” the efficient structure is all about day lighting and light penetrates the compact space from all sides. Broad window wells, high windows, and a floor-to-ceiling wall of glass look east into the garden courtyard and three rows of clerestories open to the south to light the main floor and provide much of the heat needed in the winter.

Partial height walls define the living room and encourage natural light to flow to adjacent spaces. The kitchen features open shelving, maple cabinets, EcoTop counters fashioned from post consumer recycled paper, rapidly renewable bamboo fibers, and an electric induction stovetop.

Throughout the house maple floors serve to unify the spaces and the same material flows outside to form the floor of the covered outdoor living area. An intimate courtyard is shaped by the outdoor room, a one-car garage and a 500 square foot artist’s studio.
